Rio 2016: BMX at the Olympics – General info, history, past winners and schedule

The BMX Cycling event at the Olympics is the newest sports addition to the events list in the quadrennial games. In Rio 2016, BMX will once again return after making its debut in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

BMX is one of the most popular events during the Summer Games especially as it caters to a younger audience that supports and play the sport as hobbies.

“Groups of 8 riders start at the top of an 8-metre high starting ramp into a circuit
of 300m to 400m with lots of jumps, turns, rises and descents – and even flat parts,” the official Olympics site describes the BMX competition. “The first four athletes to cross the finish line advance to the following phase.”

Maris Stromberg from Latvia is the favorite in the men’s competition having won the gold medal both in 2008 Beijing and 2012 London.

According to, the origin of Bicycle Motocross or BMX for short can be traced to the Netherlands in the early 1950s. It notes that it’s in the United States that the “sport would boom” as BMX racing competitions and exhibitions made the mainstream sports viewing in the country and the world.

The BMX event at Rio 2016 will be held from August 17 to 20 at the Olympic BMX Centre is located at Deodoro X-Park in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
