NBA News: Michael Jordan ‘breaks his silence,’ donates $2 million to victims of police-related shootings
Former NBA superstar Michael Jordan speaks out against police violence and donates $2 million to help in the fight of the African-American community. Meanwhile, he also reaches out to the police community in an effort to promote peace and order.
The Chicago Bull legend and owner of the Charlotte Hornets said in a statement, published by the ESPN platform The Undefeated, that he is donating $1 million to the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s Institute for Community-Police Relations and another $1 million to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

“I have decided to speak out in the hope that we can come together as Americans, and through peaceful dialogue and education, achieve constructive change,” Jordan said.
“To support that effort, I am making contributions of $1 million each to two organizations, the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s newly established Institute for Community-Police Relations and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.”

Michael Jordan decided to break his silence on the recent killings of black men by police officers and also on the the deaths of police officers. This is the first time Jordan speaks out after keeping mum on his opinions on social and political issues over the past years.
The NBA legend exerted these efforts to add his voice to the fight against the social injustices that are getting worse everyday. Jordan also mentioned his support to the families who lost their loved ones due to these issues, sharing that he also felt the pain they feel.
James Raymond Jordan Sr., Michael Jordan’s father, was killed by a gunshot wound in a robbery attempt in 1993 at North Carolina. This incident made a great impact on his life. The suspects were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment.

Aside from Michael Jordan, other basketball superstars like Lebron James, Chris Paul, Dwayne Wade and Carmelo Anthony expressed their support with regard the fight against gun violence, racial justice, killings of black men by police officers during interactions and deaths of police officers.
New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony encouraged other athletes via his Instagam account to use their stardom ad popularity to stand against social and political injustices. He stated in the said post that athletes should step up and take charge to achieve the change we want.
