NBA Rumors: Harrison Barnes better than Chandler Parsons says Mavericks owner Mark Cuban

Mark Cuban, the owner of the Dallas Mavericks, is one of the most vocal team officials in the league. His team was very active in the 2016 offseason where they acquired many players including Harrison Barnes, who was a restricted free agent from the Golden State Warriors.

With the free agency acquisition of Barnes, the Mavericks had no choice but to let go of Chandler Parsons, who was the former starting forward for the team. Rumors and speculations now state that Cuban is very happy that they chose Barnes over Parsons this summer.

Cuban was interviewed by the Dallas Morning News where he answered a question about the Parsons-Barnes debate and other matters about the Mavericks’ moves in free agency.

“Can’t go into any details, but I’ll just say it wasn’t a basketball issue. Chandler obviously is a very, very skilled player. There’s a lot of great things to his game. But he’s, in essence, a different player from Harrison,” Cuban answered when asked about the Parsons vs. Barnes free agency choice.

“Harrison is longer, more athletic, younger. Just like Chandler really didn’t get a chance to have his game blossom when he was with the Rockets. He just showed glimpses of it because of Dwight Howard and James Harden being there. I think Harrison was kind of in the same role. I think we’re going to give Harrison the opportunity and I know he’s excited about the opportunity to really shine and be a featured guy for us.”

Parsons signed with the Mavericks’ West rivals Memphis Grizzlies this summer. Early free agency rumors also state that the Mavericks tried to convince top free agents Hassan Whiteside and Mike Conley but both chose to stay with their previous teams, the Miami Heat and Grizzlies, respectively.

Cuban was also asked about the status of Dallas if they are a better team compared to last season. Cuban was non-committal and said that “they just never know” until the games are played.

He cited the cases of the Houston Rockets and New Orleans Pelicans last year, when both teams struggled during the regular season and also pointed to the Portland Trail Blazers, who made great improvements and played good in the NBA Playoffs.

Aside from Barnes, the Mavericks re-tooled with players like Andrew Bogut, Quincy Acy and Seth Curry via trades and free agency. Dallas will get back veterans Dirk Nowitzki, Deron Williams, Wesley Matthews next season.
