NBA Trade Rumors: Rudy Gay moving to San Antonio Spurs as top bench player?

Rudy Gay has not publicly demanded a trade from the Sacramento Kings but his exit from the California team is expected this year. Latest NBA trade rumors has the veteran forward landing with West power house team, San Antonio Spurs.

Patrick Malin from The All Out Sports Network suggests that Rudy Gay going to the Spurs would be a good idea for both parties as they “lack depth” especially from the forward position.

“The Spurs have tight financials for the upcoming season, but a trade for Gay could provide numerous benefits on a team that is lacking offensive power off the bench,” Malin wrote in an article stating that the Spurs are one of the “dark horses” to land Gay in a trade this offseason.

“There are significant question marks about whether Gay has interest in being in a sixth man role and how he can perform on the defensive side of the ball, but under the wing of the best coach in the NBA and alongside some of the most decorated professionals in the game, Gay’s talent could be maximized to give the Spurs a needed element to progress their title hopes.”

The article also suggests that Gay could go to other teams like the Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Clippers and Oklahoma City Thunder. Malin claims that the Pacers are the frontrunners to get Gay this summer to add to the NBA trade rumors.

Gay will be earning $13.3 million in the new NBA season and he has a chance to become a free agent after the year with a player option in 2017-2018. The 29-year-old forward is still very reliable on offense with averages of 17.2 points and 6.5 rebounds last year for the Kings.

The Spurs lost Tim Duncan to retirement but acquired Pau Gasol via free agency this summer. LaMarcus Aldridge and Kawhi Leonard plus Gasol and Tony Parker are expected to be at the center of the offense in San Antonio.

If the Spurs can find a way to add Gay via a trade, they will likely bring him off the bench and serve as a back-up to star forward Kawhi Leonard. Head coach Greg Popovich can also play both forwards together in their small ball line-up.
