Tennis News: Stosur, Svitolina, Strycova, Kvitova won 1st round of Rogers Cup

Tennis players Samantha Stosur, Elina Svitolina, Barbora Strycova, and Petra Kvitova won their opening games in the first round of the Women’s Tournament of Rogers Cup on Monday.

Samantha Stosur defeated the world ranked 67 Heather Watson in straight sets. The two greatest players had a tough fight, in the end, Stosur named victorious with the score of 7-5, 6-3 to advance to the next round of the tournament.

The thirteenth-seeded Stosur struggled in the first set but manage to win the set while in the second set she found her groves and easily taken the match.

”To get through in straight sets, I’m pretty happy,” said Stosur, who reached the Rogers Cup final in 2011. ”Overall, I thought I served pretty well. There weren’t a lot of points on my serve where she could dictate off the first shot.

”If I got a good strike, I was in good shape to win those points.”

Meanwhile, despite various rain delays, Barbora Strycova defeated France’s Caroline Garcia with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the next round of the tournament.

It’s a come from behind win for the world’s ranked 22nd Strycova after dropping the first set. The match was overwhelmed with five rain delays. The Czech tennis player will face sixth seed Venus Williams in the second round.

Unlike Strycova and Stosur, Elina Svitolina and Petra Kvitova had an easy time winning their opening game.

Elina Svitolina made an easy win against Jennifer Brady, winning the match in just a time of eighty minutes. The Ukraine native wins this easy match with the score of 6-2, 6-4.

The winner in the match of Canadian wildcard Francoise Abanda and Chinese qualifier Saisai Zheng will be her next opponent in the next round of the tournament.

On the other hand, the 2-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova had also an easy game, defeating Magda Linette of Poland in just 59 minutes. The former Grand Slam champion, finished the game with a score of 6-1, 6-2 to advance to the next round of the tournament.

The 26-year-old tennis player did not face the break point against Linnette and she ended the match with three service aces.

Kvitova will wait for the result of the match between Andrea Petkovic and Alize Cornet to determine her next opponent in the tournament.

Due to various rain delays, the 42nd-ranked Eugenie Bouchard and Aleksandra Wozniak were not in action on Monday

The Canadian Bouchard will meet Czech Lucie Safarova in the first round on Tuesday, while Wozniak takes on Italy’s Sara Errani.
