Cape Town – The Sharks were quite literally blow away in Wellington as the Hurricanes secured a place in the Super Rugby semi-finals with a 41-0 win on Saturday. It is the first time in the history over Super Rugby that a side has been kept scoreless in the playoffs.AS IT HAPPENED: HURRICANES 34-0 SHARKSThe rain and wind made conditions treacherous and nobody knew that more than Garth April. The Sharks flyhalf missed three kicks at goal in the first half that on a normal day would have been routine. And while April struggled, Hurricanes flyhalf Beauden Barrett excelled. After putting his side on the board with a penalty, Barrett then set up the Hurricanes’ first try with an inch-perfect high kick that saw Jason Woodward beat JP Pietersen in the air. Loni Uhila finished off the move from close range, and the Sharks were 8-0 down. The Canes had their second just five minutes later through James Marshall after some poor Sharks defence following a scrum as the hosts went blindside and scored all too easily. The Sharks thought they had scored through captain Tendai Mtawarira, but replays showed the loosehead prop wriggling his way over the line illegally and he was penalised. With the Sharks on the ropes, scrumhalf Michael Claasens hacked the ball into touch to bring about half time in a moment that was indicative of how badly things were going for the visitors. The Sharks needed to score early in the second half, but their task was made nearly impossible when Woodward scored down the left after a poor kick from Sharks fullback Willie le Roux. Barrett converted and the Hurricanes were 20-0 up – the Sharks buried. Vaea Fifita then broke through an April tackle to score the fourth of the game, and the faces on the Sharks’ players told their own story as the match was over as a contest with over half-an-hour remaining.TJ Perenara was up next as he dived through a non-existent Sharks defence to make it 34-0 before Brad Shields made it the perfect night for the hosts.
